eConsultation: An easy and economical option before a visit to the doctor.


According to International Society for Telemedicine (ISFT) the recommendations for uniform use of eConsultations are:
• Referrals to specialists
• Accompanying images
• Specialists' replies to photographs and referrals


Referrals: A referral is sent with an image by e-mail. The referral should contain as much information as possible, with details of the medication used and past medical history. You may give as much details as you feel is necessary in your own words. 

Usually patient details are send under following headings:

• Chief complains with duration
• Brief history of current problem.
Past history – Information about past illness, hospitalization, medication, exposure and allergy.
• Objective findings
• Test results
• Current treatment given
• Patient requirements
• Query and expectations.

 Digital images: eConsultation may be  accompanied by digital images.  Digital cameras with a resolution of 2 million pixels or more are recommended. Images (JPEG) from a distance as well as close-ups should be attached with the referral email. Please attach images of the patient, investigation reports, previous treatment, and imaging studies if done. 

eConsultation report:

The reply is sent by e-mail. The reply usually includes comment on:
  •  Possible diagnosis and differential diagnosis
  • Suggested treatment and medications
  • Suggested other investigations to be done
  • Recommended information for the patient. (Online or reading material)
